CMF Speaker M Review: Is This RM459 Bluetooth Speaker Worth Buying?

At RM459 in Malaysia, the CMF Speaker M stands out before you even turn it on. Its milk-carton shape and removable front pieces make it one of the more recognisable portable speakers I’ve used. What kept me listening was its clear, balanced sound, especially at the levels I’d actually use at home.

A portable speaker you can customise

The angular polycarbonate body has a silicone front and a handle at the top. At about 602g, it has some heft on a desk, but the handle makes it easy to take from room to room or pack for an outing. The knob and front panel can be swapped, and CMF provides 3D-print files if you want to make your own. The IP68 rating is handy if you plan to use it in the kitchen or by the pool.

Clear vocals and punchy bass at everyday volumes

A 70mm woofer and a 16mm tweeter deliver a combined 35W RMS. Vocals sat slightly forward in my listening, and instruments stayed distinct enough that acoustic tracks didn’t feel crowded. That tuning worked well for pop, folk and podcasts. Kick drums had a satisfying snap, although the deepest bass was limited. If you want the low-end weight of a larger speaker for EDM, you’ll hear the difference.

The Speaker M had enough output for a bedroom, study or medium-sized living room. I liked the balance most around 50% to 70% volume. Near maximum, I heard some compression and slight distortion. For a small gathering I’d happily use it, but I wouldn’t buy it to run flat out in a large outdoor space.

Bluetooth, USB-C and two ways to play across speakers

Bluetooth 6.0 comes with NFC pairing and dual-device connectivity, handy for switching between a phone and tablet. USB-C digital audio gives you a wired option. In the Nothing X app, you can adjust EQ or try Ultra Bass and Wide Soundstage to suit the track.

Auracast lets compatible devices share a broadcast. If you have two Speaker M units, you can also pair them as separate left and right channels. That’s the option I’d look at if I wanted a wider stereo setup for a desk or living room.

Battery life and verdict

CMF rates playback at up to 18 hours at around half volume with Ultra Bass on. That’s a useful target for a day out, though the figure will vary with how loudly you listen.

At RM459, I’d consider the Speaker M if I wanted a speaker that looks good on a desk, travels easily and puts vocals ahead of exaggerated bass. The removable parts and flexible connections add to its appeal. If deep bass or high-volume outdoor playback is the priority, I’d spend the money on a larger speaker.
