The iPhone 18 Pro starts at RM5,499 in Malaysia, but choosing more storage can add as much as RM6,000 to the bill. The 512GB model costs RM1,000 more than the 256GB version, while the 1TB option adds RM3,000.
MDROID’s look at Apple’s storage pricing highlights why the entry price tells only part of the story. Buyers considering a larger capacity should compare the actual ringgit difference, rather than assume every storage option has stayed at last year’s price.
Malaysia prices and upgrade costs
| iPhone 18 Pro storage | Malaysia price | Extra over 256GB |
|---|---|---|
| 256GB | RM5,499 | — |
| 512GB | RM6,499 | RM1,000 |
| 1TB | RM8,499 | RM3,000 |
| 2TB | RM11,499 | RM6,000 |
Moving from 512GB to 1TB costs RM2,000; stepping from 1TB to 2TB adds another RM3,000. These are prices for the Pro, rather than the larger Pro Max, which has a separate price list.
Compared with the iPhone 17 Pro’s launch prices cited in MDROID’s report, the 256GB and 512GB tiers remain unchanged. The 1TB model is RM1,000 more expensive, and 2TB is a new capacity option for the smaller Pro.
What the overseas cost estimate actually means
The report also discusses a Wall Street Journal analysis of Apple’s storage costs. As reported by Macworld, this year’s iPhone storage upgrade charges were estimated at roughly three times the additional flash component cost, following increases in chip prices.
That is an overseas component-cost estimate. It does not establish Apple’s Malaysian profit margin, and the RM1,000 local upgrade charge cannot simply be compared with a US chip-cost figure to calculate local profit.
A flash component estimate also leaves out the wider costs of developing, manufacturing, distributing and supporting a phone. A charge being several times a component’s estimated cost is different from a profit margin of the same percentage.
Choose around your own storage use
Before paying for a larger capacity, check Settings → General → iPhone Storage on your current phone. Look at what photos, videos, games and offline downloads already occupy, then allow for how that may grow over the years you expect to keep the device.
More storage can be useful for frequent high-quality video recording or large collections of local files. If your current usage remains modest, the extra RM3,000 for 1TB deserves careful thought. Cloud services can help manage some files, but bring their own subscription costs and connectivity requirements.
