Samsung Explains How the Galaxy Z Fold8 Balances Slim Design and Durability

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8 held open

For Malaysian buyers considering Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold8, durability and repair support matter as much as a slimmer body. Samsung has outlined how it approaches both, pairing changes to the phone’s structure with optional Samsung Care+ protection available locally.

The company’s explanation, covered by MDROID, focuses on how the screen, hinge and internal components work together. These are Samsung’s engineering claims, rather than findings from a new hands-on durability test.

A lighter body starts with the parts inside

Samsung says it reviewed around 270 components and more than 180 types of supporting parts when developing the Fold8. The aim was to improve the layout as a whole: changes to the display or hinge also affect the space available for batteries, cooling and structural support.

The resulting Fold8 weighs 201g and measures 4.5mm unfolded or 9.7mm folded. Those measurements make portability a central part of its design, while still requiring support for a display that bends repeatedly.

More than a hinge test

According to Samsung, the Fold8 goes through more than 100 reliability validation tests. The assessment considers the complete device under different stresses, rather than relying solely on a headline number of hinge cycles.

That distinction matters because pressure on one part can affect another. Screen support, the frame and the way components respond to repeated folding all contribute to how a foldable holds up over time.

Materials chosen for a thinner folding display

The Fold8’s Flex Titanium design combines a thin titanium-alloy film with a reinforced titanium support plate. Samsung says this makes the display module 10% thinner while improving flatness and structural stability.

An Advanced Armor Aluminum frame and Corning Gorilla Glass Ceramic 3 on the cover screen provide further protection. The phone also carries an IP48 rating, although this does not make it dust-tight. Owners should still keep sand and fine particles away from the folding mechanism.

The Ultra’s battery is a separate part of the story

Samsung also points to the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra’s 5,000mAh battery, silicon-carbon anode, graphite cooling material and Independent Charging Architecture. These specifications refer to the Ultra model.

Its claimed video playback time of up to 27 hours comes from Samsung’s internal laboratory testing. Actual endurance will depend on brightness, connectivity, content, battery condition and usage.

What Malaysian owners should check

Samsung Care+ is an optional extra for Galaxy Z series owners in Malaysia. Depending on the selected plan and eligibility, it can cover accidental and liquid damage, with some plans also offering extended warranty benefits and authorised repairs.

Service fees, deductibles and registration requirements may apply. Buyers should check the Malaysian Samsung Care+ terms for their device and plan rather than assume every repair is free.

For anyone weighing up a foldable, the useful questions extend beyond thickness: how well is the screen supported, what protection is included, and what would a repair cost? Samsung’s explanation sets out its approach, while long-term reliability still depends on how the device performs in everyday use.
