Spotify Family Members May Need In-Person QR Verification Within 7 Days

Some Spotify Premium Family members may be asked to complete an in-person QR scan within seven days to confirm they live with their plan manager. The process is documented on Spotify’s Malaysian support site.

As Mdroid reports, this makes the same-household requirement more visible to people sharing a Family subscription. Spotify’s wording refers to selected members, however, rather than a requirement already sent to every Malaysian subscriber.

How the QR check works

The manager displays a verification code through the mobile app’s profile menu, under Your Premium and Manage. The member scans it using their own phone camera while both are in the same location.

Spotify specifies the latest mobile app and gives notified members seven days to finish. The code refreshes every few seconds, so its instructions call for an in-person scan.

What happens if verification fails?

The official support page says missing or failing the QR check prevents a member from joining a different Family or Duo plan for 12 months. Other subscription options remain available.

Separately, its address-reverification section explains that failure or a missed seven-day deadline removes access to the shared plan and moves the account to Free. Rejoining the same Family or Duo plan is allowed, subject to verification.

What Malaysian subscribers should keep in mind

Headline What it means
Family checks are getting attention Follow the notice on your own account; do not assume everyone has the same deadline.
Premium access may be lost This concerns the affected shared-plan benefits, rather than a permanent account ban.
A restriction on changing shared plans This is different from being unable to buy any Premium subscription.

For a household that legitimately shares a plan, the practical issue is coordinating the check before its deadline. Check the notification promptly rather than waiting until the final day.

If scanning fails, Spotify recommends updating both apps, checking device dates and times, and reopening the apps. Use the official support instructions for your account if the problem continues.
