Sony WF-1000XM6 Launch: 25% Better Noise Cancellation, RM1599 price

Sony officially launched the WF-1000XM6 true wireless earbuds on February 12, marking the latest addition to its flagship 1000X noise-canceling series. The new earbuds are available immediately for $329.99, representing a $30 increase from the previous WF-1000XM5 model that launched at RM1599, with special introductory price of RM1249.

The headlining improvement centers on noise cancellation performance. Sony claims the WF-1000XM6 achieves a 25% reduction in ambient noise compared to its predecessor, with particularly notable gains in the mid-to-high frequency range commonly encountered in commuting and public spaces.

This enhanced performance comes courtesy of the new third-generation QN3e HD Noise Canceling Processor, which operates three times faster than the previous generation’s processor. Each earbud now features four microphones, up from three in the WF-1000XM5, bringing the total to eight adaptive microphones working together to block out unwanted sound.

Sound quality has received significant attention with a redesigned driver unit featuring a unique diaphragm that combines different materials. The soft edge produces deep bass while the lightweight, rigid dome delivers clear high frequencies.

The earbuds are powered by Sony’s Integrated Processor V2, supporting 32-bit audio processing and Hi-Res Audio Wireless via the LDAC codec. Additional features include DSEE Extreme audio upscaling, 360 Reality Audio with head tracking, and a customizable 10-band equalizer accessible through the Sony Sound Connect app.

Design-wise, the WF-1000XM6 returns to a matte finish after the WF-1000XM5’s glossy exterior, addressing user feedback from the previous generation. The earbuds adopt a more elongated, pill-shaped profile that Sony says better follows the natural contours of the inner ear. Despite appearing larger, the body is approximately 11% slimmer than its predecessor, reducing interference with the ear’s complex shape.

A newly adopted ventilation structure increases airflow, significantly reducing internal noises such as footsteps and chewing sounds. The charging case has been redesigned for easier one-handed operation, and the earbuds themselves are easier to grip when removing from the case.

Connectivity has been improved with antennas that are 1.5 times larger than the previous model, alongside advanced algorithms for more reliable connections. The earbuds support Bluetooth multipoint for simultaneous connection to two devices, Auracast for next-generation audio sharing, and are ready for LE Audio with ultra-low latency for gaming applications. Fast Pair and Swift Pair are supported for quick connection to Android and Windows devices.

Call quality receives what Sony describes as its best implementation yet, combining a bone-conduction sensor with two microphones per earbud and an AI-powered beamforming noise-reduction algorithm to isolate voices from background noise.

Battery life remains unchanged from the previous generation, offering eight hours of continuous playback with active noise cancellation enabled, plus an additional 16 hours from the charging case for a total of 24 hours. The case supports Qi wireless charging. Water resistance is maintained at IPX4 rating, providing protection against omnidirectional water splashes.

The WF-1000XM6 launches in two colorways: Black with a smooth, refined texture, and Platinum Silver featuring metal flakes and glass beads for what Sony describes as a fresh and airy feel.

The earbuds are available now through Sony’s official website and authorized retailers worldwide.
