Malaysian Home Minister Urges Citizens to Check MyKad Chips Ahead of RON95 Subsidy Launch
Malaysia’s Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution has called on all citizens to immediately check whether their MyKad chip functions properly, warning that faulty chips may prevent drivers from enjoying the new RON95 fuel subsidy priced at RM1.99 per litre when the scheme begins at the end of this month.
MyKad Verification at Petrol Stations
Under the government’s targeted subsidy mechanism, motorists must verify their identity using their MyKad at petrol stations before refueling. Once the system confirms eligibility, they will be able to purchase RON95 at the subsidised price (current retail price: RM2.05 per litre).
Replace or Repair Faulty Chips Without Delay
Saifuddin reminded the public that damaged or unreadable chips should be repaired or replaced immediately at any National Registration Department (JPN) branch. The replacement or repair process can typically be completed on the same day.
“Do not wait until the last minute. Check early so you and your friends can enjoy this special fuel subsidy smoothly,” he wrote in a Facebook post.
Government’s Commitment to Reduce Living Costs
The minister stressed that this measure reflects Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s commitment to easing the people’s financial burden.
“Although it took some time, he has kept his word. Every promise will be delivered for the benefit of Malaysians,” Saifuddin said.
Risk of Paying Market Price Without a Working MyKad
Motorists with unreadable MyKad chips will be charged the unsubsidised market price of RON95, estimated between RM2.50 and RM2.60 per litre. The government urges citizens to check early to avoid long queues at JPN offices once the subsidy takes effect.
Replacement Times Vary by Region
While the minister noted that MyKad can be replaced in one day, media reports highlight variations. Only selected Urban Transformation Centres (UTCs) offer a 30-minute replacement service. In East Malaysia, the replacement process may take up to seven days.
Key Details Still Unclear
Several subsidy details remain undisclosed, such as the full list of eligible citizens and the exact quota limits. Early leaks suggest that Petronas’ Setel app, which already uses eKYC identity verification, may allow eligible users to access subsidies directly. However, this claim has yet to be officially confirmed.
