Google plans to invest US$15 billion in Malaysia over 2027 and 2028, expanding its data centre footprint and supporting programmes for skills, clean energy and water management. Announced on 4 November 2026, the commitment builds on the US$2 billion investment announced in 2024 for Google’s first Malaysian data centre and local Cloud region.
More data centres in Selangor and Negeri Sembilan
The expansion includes additional data centre campuses in Selangor and Negeri Sembilan. Together with a local Google Cloud region, the infrastructure will support cloud computing and AI services for businesses in Malaysia.
Google projects that construction will support more than 37,000 local jobs annually during 2027 and 2028, contributing an average of US$1.1 billion a year to Malaysia’s GDP. This estimate includes jobs across the supply chain. Once operational, the campuses are projected to support more than 9,000 local jobs annually.
Skills programmes for 800,000 Malaysians
Google aims to help around 800,000 Malaysians build skills by 2031. Experience AI Malaysia will support teachers delivering AI education, while Jelajah AI MSME is intended to help smaller businesses use digital tools. AKAD Rakyat will provide training for local government and communities.
Data Center Institutes are planned in Selangor and Negeri Sembilan from 2027, offering 10-week technical training programmes.
Power and water commitments
Google also plans to help add more than 1GW of clean-energy generating capacity to the Malaysian grid. It says it will pay its campuses’ electricity costs and the direct infrastructure costs required to connect them to the grid.
Water projects include restoration work in the Sungai Buloh and Selangor river basins, as well as rainwater collection and storage at four Selangor schools. These initiatives form part of the wider plan to manage the resources required by the growing data centre footprint.
