Huawei Mate 90 Series Launches in China, Priced From RM3,656

Huawei has officially launched the new Mate 90 series in China, introducing the Mate 90, Mate 90 Pro and Mate 90 Pro Max. The latest lineup focuses heavily on performance, display technology and mobile photography, with the higher-end models bringing dual-layer OLED panels and upgraded Kirin chipsets.

Huawei Mate 90 Pro and Pro Max

At the top of the lineup is the Mate 90 Pro Max, powered by Huawei’s new Kirin 9050 Pro chipset. The company says it delivers up to a 31% performance improvement over the previous generation.

The phone features a 6.9-inch dual-layer OLED display with a peak brightness of up to 12,000 nits at 1% APL, alongside BT.2020 wide colour gamut support and third-generation Kunlun Glass.

For photography, the Mate 90 Pro Max comes with Huawei’s third-generation Red Maple Original Colour Camera system, comprising a 50MP RYYB main camera, a 50MP telephoto camera and a 40MP RYYB ultra-wide camera.

The main camera uses a large 1/1.28-inch sensor, supports a continuous F1.4-F4.0 variable aperture and offers up to 18EV dynamic range. The telephoto camera supports 4x optical zoom.

The Pro Max also packs a 6,800mAh battery, offering up to 45 hours of long-video playback, 23 hours of short-video playback and 25 hours of outdoor navigation. It is also rated IP68/IP69 for dust and water resistance.

Meanwhile, the Mate 90 Pro uses the same 6.9-inch dual-layer OLED display and is the first phone to feature Huawei’s Kirin 9035 chipset. Compared with the Kirin 9030 in the Mate 80 Pro, Huawei claims an 11% CPU boost, 10% GPU improvement and 51% increase in NPU performance.

Its camera setup includes the third-generation Red Maple Original Colour Camera, a 50MP RYYB main camera, 50MP RYYB macro telephoto and 40MP RYYB ultra-wide camera. The main camera supports the same F1.4-F4.0 continuous variable aperture, while the telephoto camera offers 4x optical zoom and up to 8x optical-quality zoom.

The Mate 90 Pro and Pro Max also feature Huawei’s Kunlun Xuanwu architecture, designed to provide additional protection across the display, chassis and camera system.

Huawei’s “giant” modular camera

Huawei is also introducing the Ruiying Z10 modular camera, designed specifically for the Mate 90 Pro Max Collector’s Edition and selected high-end Mate models.

The independently developed camera module connects through Huawei’s HyperClick super bayonet and features a 1-inch 50MP sensor paired with a six-group, 16-element optical system. It offers a 10x continuous optical zoom, covering an equivalent 24mm-240mm focal range with an F2.0-F4.5 aperture.

Unlike conventional smartphone cameras that switch between fixed focal lengths, the Z10 supports 1x-10x continuous optical zoom video and is designed for everything from wide-angle and portraits to street photography, close-ups and concerts. It can also work with the phone’s image processing and storage, while offering different classic camera colour styles.

The Ruiying Z10 is sold separately rather than included with the phone.

Huawei Mate 90

The standard Mate 90 is powered by the Kirin 9030 flagship τ chipset. Compared with the Kirin 9020 in the Mate 80, Huawei claims a 13% CPU improvement, 54% GPU boost and 13% increase in NPU performance, resulting in a 27% overall performance improvement.

It comes with a 6.75-inch flat display and supports IP68 dust and water resistance as well as IP69 protection against high-temperature, high-pressure water jets.

The rear camera system consists of Huawei’s third-generation Red Maple Original Colour Camera, a 50MP RYYB main camera, 50MP RYYB telephoto and 40MP RYYB ultra-wide camera.

The main camera supports an F1.4-F4.0 continuous variable aperture, while the telephoto camera provides 4x optical zoom and 8x optical-quality zoom.

Across the lineup, Huawei also ships the phones with HarmonyOS 7, bringing AI features such as Xiaoyi Assistant, Xiaoyi Trigger AI and Xiaoyi App Assistant. The phones also support Huawei’s HarmonyOS cross-device connectivity features.
