The highly anticipated successor to Qualcomm’s latest sub-flagship SoC, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 was officially launched today.
Shortly after Qualcomm announced its top-tier Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 flagship chip not too long ago, it revealed that a non-“Elite” version would also be released, aimed at powering more affordably priced flagship smartphones.
Now, this much-awaited Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 chip has officially made its debut. It inherits most of the core features of the Elite version but comes with performance adjustments.
The Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 is also built on an advanced 3nm process technology and features Qualcomm’s third-generation Oryon Central Processing Unit (CPU) architecture internally, but runs at lower clock speeds.
It is equipped with two prime cores with a maximum frequency of 3.8GHz, and six performance cores set at a maximum frequency of 3.32GHz. In comparison, the Elite version’s prime and performance cores clock in at up to 4.6GHz and 3.62GHz, respectively.
Nevertheless, according to Qualcomm, compared to the two-year-old Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 offers a 36% increase in CPU performance, an 11% boost in GPU performance, and a 46% leap in AI task processing, while also optimizing overall power efficiency.
For graphics processing, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 integrates the Adreno 840 Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) and supports Frame Motion Engine 3.0, largely the same as the Elite version, but removes support for Adreno High-Performance Memory (HPM). Furthermore, the new chip is equipped with the Hexagon AI Neural Processing Unit (NPU) and Spectra Image Signal Processor (ISP), supporting on-device AI and multi-modal input.
In terms of connectivity, it features the X80 5G modem-RF system, with a slightly lower peak 5G speed than the Elite version, but maintains consistent Bluetooth and Wi-Fi performance, and continues to support satellite communication and Ultra-Wideband (UWB) technology. Notably, the chip does not support the latest UFS 4.1 storage standard. However, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 retains the same specifications as the Elite version in charging capabilities, display support, and the vast majority of camera hardware options.
Qualcomm has confirmed that several manufacturers, including Motorola, OnePlus, and vivo, have decided to use this chip in their next-generation phones. The first devices equipped with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 are expected to reach consumers in the coming weeks.
OnePlus has specifically confirmed the launch of the OnePlus 15R (or OnePlus Ace 6T) in the US on December 17th, and this device is highly likely to be one of the first models featuring the Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 to hit the market.
