Tesla has officially introduced a new variant of its popular SUV, the Model Y L, in China. The vehicle is priced at ¥339,000 RMB (approximately RM199,500) and is expected to begin deliveries in September. Positioned between the standard Model Y AWD and the Performance edition, the Model Y L is specifically designed to meet the needs of multi-child families with larger seating capacity and enhanced comfort features.

Six-Seater Layout with Expanded Space

The Model Y L features a six-seat configuration, making it more practical for families. The cargo capacity has been expanded to 2,539 liters, a 19% increase compared to the standard Model Y, providing greater flexibility for long-distance travel or group outings.

Extended Range and Performance

According to official data, the Model Y L achieves a driving range of 751 km under CTLC standards (approximately 327 miles EPA). It accelerates from 0–60 mph in 4.3 seconds. The vehicle weighs about 2,087 kg (4,603 lbs), just 4.8% heavier than the standard AWD version.

Upgraded Comfort and Technology

The Model Y L introduces multiple upgrades over the standard model:

  • Suspension: Continuous Variable Dampening for improved ride quality

  • Seating: Ventilated front and second-row seats, heated third-row seats, power folding for front and rear rows, extendable thigh support, and adjustable headrests

  • Second Row: Power-operated armrest for enhanced passenger comfort

  • Infotainment: Larger 16-inch central touchscreen (0.6” bigger than the standard version)

  • Audio: Premium 18-speaker setup with 1 subwoofer

  • Interior Design: Black headliner, extended white trim with aluminum accents

Exterior Enhancements

Tesla has also introduced a new Starlight Gold Metallic paint option, offering buyers a more distinctive and premium exterior finish.

Market Implications for Malaysia

Tesla has been actively expanding its presence in Malaysia with the Model Y and Model 3. If the Model Y L were to be introduced locally, its estimated price of RM199,500 would position it close to the current Model Y Long Range (from RM220,000).
Industry observers note that the six-seater design and increased cargo space may appeal strongly to Malaysian families, potentially intensifying competition in the local electric SUV segment.
